Lorik and Takrik

The Presentation of Lorik and Takrik: The Essence of the Ocean of Traditions of Logic (blo rig and rTags rigs) is a fundamental text currently used in the East in Tibetan shedras to teach logic, and in the West in translation at Nitartha Institute.

The author, Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche, is a preeminent scholar and meditation master within the Kagyu educational system.

His Lorik and Takrik illustrate the continuity over the centuries within the Tibetan educational system. The three logic texts included in the volume serve as commentaries on a fifteenth century Tibetan text on logic by Chodrak Gyatso, the Seventh Karmapa, which is in turn based on the groundbreaking works of logic written in India in the fifth and seventh century by Dignaga and Dharmakirti. The issues raised in these works are relevant today, both to academics who study the foundations of logical argument, and to others, who are in daily life confronted with the need to distinguish the true from the false.
