Dream Flag: join Nitartha

Certain Nitartha-Sambhota fonts which are part of the Nitartha-Sambhota software package are available for download at the request of the Asian Classics Input Project. These fonts alone do not provide any word-processing functionality. If you are interested in a fully functional program, we suggest the Nitartha-Sambhota program. For information, click here.

If you want to download the fonts only, you must agree to the following license terms:

Providing technology to transform traditional Tibetan texts published on rice paper into digital form is an important part of Nitartha's work. "Digital Pecha," is an original calligraphy by The Dzogchen Ponlop, Rinpoche.

License Agreement: The Nitartha-Sambhota fonts are being provided for download to be used only in conjunction with viewing and printing Asian Classics Input Project texts. They cannot be redistributed in any other manner, including via Internet, CDROM, diskette, or disk, or used for any other reason, unless an explicit written agreement was previously made with the author of the software, Gerry Wiener, or unless an explicit written agreement is made with Nitartha international. Nitartha international provides Tibetan keyboard software enabling Tibetan text entry using the Nitartha-Sambhota fonts. The Nitartha-Sambhota fonts are not being provided for download so that competing software can be sold and/or distributed using these fonts.

For systems running Microsoft Windows 95 or 98, or NT, indicate your agreement by clicking the button below to begin downloading a Windows self-extracting file:

For other configrations, a DOS self-extracting file is available. Indicate your agreement by clicking the button below to begin downloading a DOS self-extracting file:

If you are having problems downloading, see our FAQ section .

Pressing either of the "I agree" buttons will indicate your acceptance of the license agreement and initiate the download. You will download either the file called Nitart95.exe (Windows version) or Nitardos.exe (DOS version). The file contains compressed versions of three fonts: Esama.ttf, Esamb.ttf and Esamc.ttf. Expand the fonts by double-clicking the file in windows and the fonts will be automatically extracted to a directory of your choice. To read ACIP texts, install the fonts to your system as per the following instructions for Microsoft Windows based systems.

Installing the Sambhota Tibetan-Script Fonts

The following information has been provided by ACIP. For more information on installation or on obtaining ACIP texts for download, please see the information at http://www.asianclassics.org.

Installing the Sambhota Tibetan-Script Fonts on a Windows System

ACIP has licensed the Tibetan language font from Nitartha international so that you can view and print the text material in the original Tibetan script. Like any other font, this must be installed in your Windows system before it will work. The routine that installs AsiaView on your computer is designed to install the font automatically. Therefore, the following instructions are only necessary if you have never installed AsiaView and are downloading the fonts from this site for the first time.

STEP 1: Locate the fonts on your CD or download them from here

On the ACIP CD-ROM, the primary Sambhota fonts are located in the "Fonts" subdirectory under the "Sambhota" directory. During the AsiaView automated installation the fonts are placed in C:\Windows\Fonts.

If you do not have the AsiaView CD, you can download the fonts from this web site into your C:\Windows\Fonts directory (or a temporary directory if you prefer as the font installation process will allow either).

STEP 2: Install the fonts on your PC

An easy way to do this in Windows 95 is to click on "Start" in the opening Windows menu. Then click on the "Help" menu option. Click on the "Index" tab in the Help Window. Type out the word "fonts" in the index screen, and under this subject double-click on "adding to your computer." This selection guides you through the process of opening the Fonts folder, clicking on "Install New Font," clicking on the drive and folder that contains the Sambhota Tibetan fonts, and finally double-clicking on the icon of the font you want to add. You may have to restart your computer to be sure the installation is complete.

STEP 3: Check the installation

If you have correctly installed the fonts, they should be available for use in either Wordpad or Microsoft Word, just as any other font such as Courier or Times. To verify this, start up either word processor and type a few English characters in. Select the characters. Scroll though the font menu and select the Esama font. Also adjust the font size to be at least 20, as the Esama fonts appear smaller than their English equivalents. If you see Tibetan characters appear, you have successfully installed the Sambhota fonts and will be able to download and view the Tibetan versions of the texts directly from your browser.
