The teachings on the Five Buddha Families explain the five major energies or five wisdoms which in the confused ground state are expressed as negative emotions, and in the enlightened state manifest as the play of wisdom energy. The masks are divided into two parts, the left half illustrating negative emotionality and the right half the color of the enlightened energy into which the negativity is transformed by enlightenment. The transform- ations are:

Vajra: anger and aggression into mirror-like wisdom

Karma: jealousy and envy into all- accomplishing wisdom

Padma: desire, lust and passion into the wisdom of discriminating awareness

Buddha: ignorance and bewilderment into the wisdom of primordial awareness

Ratna: greed and envy into the wisdom of equanimity
